World’s Largest Cruise Ship Embarks on Maiden Voyage
Kathmandu, Jan 28: The world’s largest cruise ship, named ‘Icon of the Seas,’ commenced its maiden voyage from Miami, Florida, USA, after its inauguration on Sunday.
Measuring an impressive 365 meters (1,197 feet) in length and featuring 20 decks, this cruise ship, owned by the Royal Caribbean Group, has the capacity to accommodate a staggering 7,600 passengers simultaneously. The maiden voyage is set to be a seven-day journey, offering passengers a unique and luxurious experience.
Among its remarkable features, the ‘Icon of the Seas’ boasts seven swimming pools, six waterslides, and a remarkable 40 restaurants, bars, and lounges. A standout feature is the inclusion of a small garden called Central Park, adorned with real trees and plants, along with a statue of a swimmer positioned atop the park.
Despite its grandeur, the cruise ship is not without controversy. Environmentalists have raised concerns about its impact, particularly regarding the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. Critics argue that LNG, while being a cleaner alternative to conventional marine fuel, has the potential for methane emissions.
In response, a spokesperson from the Royal Caribbean Group reassured that the ship adheres to international maritime standards for modern vessels, claiming a 24 percent reduction in gas emissions compared to traditional counterparts. The ongoing debate underscores the balance between the appeal of luxury cruise experiences and environmental sustainability.
