Gamboro Disease Claims Over 5,000 Chickens in Kailali, Leaving Farmer Devastated
Kailali, Oct 5: More than 5,000 chickens have died due to Gamboro disease at a poultry farm in Ghodaghodi Municipality-8, Kailali, causing severe financial loss to local farmer Pahl Deuba. This outbreak is the first of its kind in the area, wiping out nearly all of the 5,700 chickens raised on the farm. Deuba estimates losses exceeding 30 lakhs rupees.
Despite efforts to administer vaccines and medicines, the chickens continued to die, leaving the cages empty. Manoj Acharya, Animal Branch Technician of Ghodaghodi Municipality, confirmed the devastating impact, stating only 600-700 chickens remain, and they too are succumbing to the disease.
Deuba expressed disappointment over the lack of insurance coverage for chickens under the government’s animal insurance program, which only covers livestock like buffaloes and goats. He highlighted the need for insurance options for poultry farmers to safeguard against such heavy losses, especially during the festival season.
