Manang, Nov 24: With the arrival of winter, the rivers, streams, and lakes in Manang have begun to freeze, creating a surreal landscape that draws both domestic and international tourists. Glacial lakes such as Tilicho (4,919 meters), Ice Lake (4,600 meters), Dona Lake, and Pongkar have turned into frozen spectacles, resembling solid rocks, according to Sonam Gurung, ward chair of Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality-6.

Harsh Winter Conditions:

• Temperatures have plummeted to as low as -10°C in the evenings and mornings, with even daytime temperatures remaining below freezing.
• Water sources, including drinking water taps and pipes, have frozen in higher-altitude areas such as Timang, Thanchok, and Chame, disrupting daily life.
• Water flows only during the afternoon as it thaws temporarily before refreezing at night.

Tourist Attraction:

Despite the extreme cold, Manang continues to attract tourists eager to experience the unique phenomenon of walking on frozen lakes.

• The glacial lakes, known for their clear blue hue when frozen, are covered in snow during winter and transform into reflective surfaces in the summer, making them a year-round attraction.
• Binod Gurung, Chairman of the Tourism Entrepreneurs Committee, highlighted that the lakes’ changing appearances across seasons enhance their appeal to visitors.

Tourists are drawn by the rare opportunity to witness frozen water bodies, snow-covered landscapes, and the majestic Himalayan shadows. Local tourism officials report steady arrivals of visitors who enjoy activities like exploring frozen lakes and streams.
