WASHINGTON D.C., Feb 4: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the White House next week at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, a White House official told Reuters.

The invitation follows a recent phone conversation between the two leaders on January 27, during which they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening U.S.-India strategic ties and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership.

During the call, Trump highlighted immigration issues, India’s increasing purchases of U.S.-made security equipment, and the importance of bilateral trade. The White House statement emphasized expanding cooperation on regional security in the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Europe.

India and the U.S. have a significant trade relationship, with bilateral trade reaching $118 billion in 2023-24 and India recording $32 billion in trade savings. Modi’s visit is expected to focus on trade, defense cooperation, and easing visa policies for skilled Indian workers.

Modi and Trump share a strong personal rapport, with Modi being among the first to congratulate Trump on his re-election. Their relationship has reinforced U.S.-India solidarity on global issues.

The visit also coincides with a U.S. deportation flight carrying Indian migrants under the Trump administration’s stricter immigration policies. Meanwhile, India is keen to avoid potential U.S. tariffs, as Trump has previously criticized India’s high duties on American goods.
