Australian Envoy Meets Energy Minister, Pledges Support for Nepal’s Hydropower Ambitions

Kathmandu, Aug 11: Australian Ambassador to Nepal Leanne Johnston met with Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka on Monday, discussing ways to boost cooperation in the energy sector.
Minister Khadka thanked Australia for its ongoing assistance, particularly in scholarships and capacity-building programs, and highlighted opportunities for collaboration in hydropower, renewable energy, transmission upgrades, climate-friendly irrigation, clean energy, and technology.
Ambassador Johnston invited Khadka to attend the International Pumped Storage Hydropower Conference in Paris from September 8–10, 2025. Khadka welcomed the invitation, expressing hope the event would help identify new opportunities and advance Nepal’s energy mix goals.
Johnston also congratulated Khadka on the recently unveiled “Energy Sector Development Roadmap 2081,” which targets generating 28,500 MW of electricity by 2035 — including 13,500 MW for domestic use, 10,000 MW for export to India, and 5,000 MW for Bangladesh.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Nepal–Australia ties, with Johnston assuring continued Australian cooperation to ensure hydropower growth while maintaining environmental balance.
