Kathmandu, Oct 10: The Israeli government has approved a ceasefire agreement with Hamas aimed at ending the two-year war in Gaza and ensuring the release of all remaining hostages.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced on Friday morning that the cabinet had ratified the framework for the release of all hostages, both living and deceased. However, far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich voted against the decision.

According to the agreement, the war will end immediately following government approval. “All military operations, including air and artillery bombardments, will be suspended,” the statement said.

The cabinet meeting was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.

Under the deal, Hamas will release 20 hostages and 28 bodies within 72 hours of Israeli troop withdrawal. In exchange, Israel will free around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 270 convicted of attacks on civilians and about 1,700 Gazans detained without trial. Israel will also return the bodies of 360 Hamas fighters.

The historic agreement was reached after three days of indirect talks in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, mediated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

The two-year-long Israeli offensive has devastated Gaza, killing over 67,000 Palestinians and leaving millions facing severe starvation and a deep humanitarian crisis, according to local health officials.
