Kathmandu, April 15: A new night bus service equipped with Wi-Fi has officially begun operations across Kathmandu Valley from Tuesday, connecting areas including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Chandragiri and Budhanilkantha.

The service was jointly launched by local government leaders including Acting Chief of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol, Lalitpur Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan, Chandragiri Mayor Ghanshyam Giri and Budhanilkantha Mayor Mithaksharaya Ram Adhikari.

Initially, seven buses have been deployed, each fitted with four CCTV cameras for monitoring passengers and ensuring safety. A municipal police officer is stationed on every bus, and live surveillance is managed through a control room to prevent misconduct and ensure security.

The buses operate on two major routes—one connecting Lagankhel to Budhanilkantha via major hospitals and city hubs, and another linking Thankot to Tribhuvan International Airport through key urban areas. Buses are available approximately every 20 minutes from main transit points such as New Road and NAC.

Officials stated that the service prioritizes accessibility, safety and service quality over immediate financial returns. Plans are underway to make the night service sustainable and eventually expand into morning operations.

The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat, which will initially bear operational costs until mid-July, after which local governments will adopt a cost-sharing model.

Authorities believe the service will significantly benefit daily commuters, enhance mobility during late hours and contribute to economic and social activity across the valley.
