Islamabad, April 15: A second round of high-level peace talks between the United States and Iran is set to resume in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, aiming to ease escalating tensions.

US President Donald Trump has indicated that the talks could take place within the next two days. The renewed dialogue comes after a previous 21-hour round of negotiations failed to produce a breakthrough, heightening military tensions and uncertainty in global oil markets.

The talks are being facilitated by Pakistan, with Army Chief Field Marshal General Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif playing key mediating roles. Trump has praised Pakistan’s efforts, calling the initiative a positive step toward diplomacy.

US Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will represent Iran. Major sticking points remain, including Washington’s demand for a 20-year ban on Iran’s uranium enrichment program and Tehran’s refusal to accept restrictions beyond 10 years.

The United States is also pushing for the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route that carries about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply.

Following news of the talks, global crude oil prices have shown signs of stabilization. If successful, the negotiations could replace the current two-week ceasefire, set to expire soon, with a long-term peace agreement.

The UN Secretary-General has described the talks as a “last opportunity” for de-escalation and urged both sides to show flexibility. Security has been tightened across Islamabad, with an official announcement on the schedule and venue expected shortly.
