Jacinda Ardern gets major victory for a second term as New Zealand’s Prime Minister
Christchurch. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has managed to secure a second term in the office, by winning 48.9% of the votes in the latest elections. Her center-left Labour Party is the only party to have won with such a majority since the new system was introduced in 1996.
According to an article in CNN, she emerged victorious due to her effective management of the COVID-19 crisis. New Zealand has witnessed around 2,000 cases and 25 deaths since the pandemic spread in March this year. Although all the votes for the Parliamentary seats have not yet been counted, the Labour Party is likely to win the majority seats. New Zealand’s parliament has a total of 120 members and a minimum of 61 seats is required to win. It has been predicted that her party will win 64 seats.
Ardern in her victory speech on Saturday stated, “Tonight, New Zealand has shown the Labour Party its greatest support in at least 50 years. And I can promise you: we will be a party that governs for every New Zealander.”
General elections in New Zealand takes place every three years.
