Manila, Philippines. Lieutenant Christine Bolok, a Philippine police officer, was killed by a rooster during a raid on an illegal cockfight, on Tuesday.
In a raid at the illegal event, the lieutenant had picked up a fighting cock as evidence and was struck by the razor-sharp steel blade attached to the leg of the fighting rooster which sliced through the artery of his left thigh, causing a heavy bleeding. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The ill-fated incident took place in San Jose town where Lieutenant Bolok was the police chief.
“It was an unfortunate accident and a piece of bad luck that I cannot explain,” police chief of the province of Northern Samar Colonel Arnel Apud told AFP. “I could not believe it when it was first reported to me. This is the first time in my 25 years as a policeman that I lost a man due to a fighting cock’s spur.”
Cockfighting is popular in the Philippines, but it has been banned during the pandemic as it draws large crowds
The Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that three people were arrested and seven fighting roosters, with two sets of spurs were confiscated.
