Facebook India’s policy chief resigns
Kathmandu. Two months after being embroiled within the hate speech controversy, the chief of Facebook India’s policy head, Ankhi Das resigned from her post on Tuesday, after 9 years of service since 2011.
The resignation is portrayed as a routine exit by Facebook because of her personal interest in public service. Her sudden departure has triggered the media as she was seen in front of the Joint Parliamentary Committee studying the Personal Data Protection Bill last Friday.
Earlier in August, Das was listed in the Wall Street Journal report for “alleged deliberate and intentional inaction to contain certain hateful content in India.” She had blocked actions against leaders and Hindutva groups associated with the ruling party of Narendra Modi. According to The Wall Street Journal, she told staff that “punishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party leaders for policy violations would damage Facebook’s business landscape in India.”
Facebook has denied the allegations and claims to have no party affiliation. But the controversy has put the social network in a critical position in the world’s largest market.
Facebook is very popular in India with over 300 million users
