Modi to face Imran Khan and Xi Jinping on virtual summits

Kathmandu. Russia is hosting a virtual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) of the Shanghai Pact on November 10. The leaders of Nepal, India, Pakistan, China, as well as 14 other countries will be participating. India has been clashing with both China and Pakistan on its territorial fronts.

Earlier in May, a border standoff between the state militaries of India and China erupted at the India-China border in East Ladakh, following a series of events that soured the relation between India with China. After the COVID-19 pandemic and a single meeting, which was held in May, the leaders of the two countries together have not been in an online session.

The Hindustan Times reports that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to come face to face five times this month, during the following online events:

  • SCO Summit – November 10

  • 12th BRICS Summit – November 17

  • G20 Riyadh summit – November 21 and 22

  • SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting – November 30

Similarly, Prime Minister Modi will also on the same virtual platform as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan at the SCO Summit. The bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, has been deteriorating with regards to the Kashmir. The capturing of India’s Air Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan in February, followed by the latest controversy regarding the release, has caused further tension between the public of the two countries.

India’s relation with Nepal has also deteriorated after the territorial dispute that arose after November, 2019. However, the diplomatic engagements are expected to resume after Indian Chief of Army Staff, Manoj Mukund Naravane’s 3-day visit to Nepal from November 4.
