Kathmandu. France’s President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to hold a referendum for changes in the constitution regarding climate change. In a meeting on Monday with the Citizens’ Climate Council, he revealed that clauses regarding climate change are to be added in the constitution.

President Macron has been criticized by members of his own party for his inability to combat climate change and reducing green house emissions. While European Union leaders have pledged to reduce their emission by 55% from the levels of 1990, France has not been able to meet the 2015 target under the Paris Climate agreement. The time frame of the referendum has not been announced yet, although the Parliament – Upper and Lower House of France – must give approval for it.

President Macron said, “Should we do more? Yes. We need to keep moving forward, and that work is even more urgent.” He also added that the country wasn’t doing enough to tackle climate change, and he was willing to do so.
