Bamdev Gautam becomes a member of the National Assembly

After the cabinet meeting on Monday, Vice President of Nepal Communist Party Bamdev Gautam’s name was suggested to the President for the membership of the upper house. 

President Bidya Devi Bhandari nominated him on Thursday, and Gautam was sworn in as a member of the National Assembly. He is now the second person to become a National Assembly member despite losing the 2017 parliamentary elections.

The oath of office was administered to him by the Chairman of the upper house Ganesh Prasad Timilsina. 

The Kathmandu Post reports that the ruling party’s decision to take Gautam to the National Assembly has invited some to claim and that it might be a grand plan to pave a path that leads him towards the Prime Minister’s post. As per the constitutional provisions, a non-elected person can be appointed a minister but the person must take the oath as a member of either the House of Representatives or the National Assembly within six months of his/her appointment.
