Agitators demand reform in PADT
Kathmandu. The locals of Pashupatinath Temple area demonstrated on Wednesday demanding the restructuring of Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT). The Pashupati Area Joint Struggle Committee established by the locals six months ago has been demanding the cancellation of the master plan and resignation of the PADT officials.
The protest committee has organized different programs like sit-in protests and blackouts, from Sunday. They staged protest forming a human chain on Wednesday.
Asman Sangat, coordinator of the agitating committee, states that PADT has political officials not public representation. “The development activities in the PADT have not followed the Ancient Monument Protection Act,” he said. Another coordinator, Krishnaman Shrestha, added, “We cannot accept the haphazard removal of ancient and cultural settlements, and damages caused to jatra, festivals.”
Meanwhile, World Hindu Federation has demanded the reopening of the temple for the public in compliance with the safety protocols now that operations in all sectors have resumed. The Pashupatinath Temple has been closed for devotees since the government imposed lockdown in March as a preventive measure to control mass spreading of COVID-19.
