Philadelphia, US. Demonstrations and looting continued for a second night in Philadelphia ensuing the shooting of Walter Wallace Jr by the police on Monday.

Thirty police officers were injured during violent protests Monday night, most of them from being hit by projectiles such as bricks and rocks. The police were largely outnumbered by the demonstrators, and as officers struggled to hold the crowds, police cars and dumpsters were set on fire.  Many West Philadelphia businesses, including a Walmart and Foot Locker, were looted by the protesters.

Tuesday night seems no more different. On one occasion, Philadelphia police said a large crowd of around 1,000 people are currently looting in the area of Castor and Aramingo and advised residents to avoid the area.

Police are also found requesting all residents in the 12, 16, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26th Districts to remain indoors except when necessary as those areas were experiencing demonstrations that were turning riotous.

The Philadelphia Police Department has increased presence across the city Tuesday and several hundred members of the Pennsylvania National Guard have been deployed. Police have made several arrests.

“I do not want to see my city tore down. We don’t need that. You’re not resolving anything for our family. Don’t do this in the name of my nephew because this is not what he would’ve wanted,” said Rodney Everett, Wallace’s uncle.

Wallace Jr, 27, was killed on Monday afternoon by two officers. Police say, he walked towards them and refused to drop the knife in his hand. He was shot in the shoulder and chest at least 14 times. He was pronounced dead a short time later after being taken to the hospital by the police.
