Kathmandu. The three-day meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC) office-bearers and former office-bearers has come to a conclusion that the general convention of the party could not be convened on February 19-22, 2021, as decided earlier. The meeting has also given the responsibility to general secretary duo Dr Shahshank Koirala and Purna Bahadur Khadka to fix another suitable date for the general convention.

Joint-general secretary of Nepali Congress Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat told DCNepal that all leaders present in the meeting felt it almost impossible to hold the general convention in February as decided. “All have realized that the convention can’t be held in February. A new date will be fixed by the meeting of the central working committee,” he said.

NC leaders claim that the meeting that extended for three days has been able to resolve the internal conflict of the party. With an understanding having been reached between senior leader Poudel and party President Deuba, the meeting of the central working committee has been called for November 12. NC leaders opine that the party general convention will probably be postponed to May/ June and not go beyond August.

Senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel’s group had raised voice over President Deuba’s distribution of active membership to the new NC members who had joined from other parties, without giving any role to the local committees. The two groups have now reached upon a consensus regarding the issue.

As regards another issue, the formation of departments, Deuba, didn’t budge from his decision and told that the already formed departments could not be dismissed. It has been learnt that Poudel didn’t pressurize upon the issue in the meeting after Deuba’s rigid stance and the meeting concluded with the two groups reaching an understanding.
