Kathmandu, January 1. Bangladesh has transported around 3,000 Rohingyas to a remote island of Bhasan Char despite concerns of human rights activists’ that the island is prone to natural disasters.
After the first batch of transfer, the second batch of 1,600 Rohingyas were transferred to the island on Tuesday. Bangladesh aims to decongest the refugee camp at Cox’s Bazaar, which houses around one million Rohingyas.
Various human rights organizations and United Nations have condemned the transfer as the island is prone to natural disasters such as flooding and cyclones.
A large number of Rohingyas had fled Myanmar in 2017 after a major suppression by the military. Multiple efforts of repatriation failed as many refused to return due to the fear of violence.
