The drone was found on December 20 and is said to be developed by Shenyang institute of automation at the Chinese Academy of Science. It is used to collect data including seawater temperature, salinity, turbidity and oxygen levels.

China has often been criticized for its activities in and around the South China Sea. China has been conducting research in areas or regions at the sea where it is considered to be militarily significant. Muhammad Fauzan, an Indonesian security analyst has said to ABC that it is the third time that a fisherman had found such a device in Indonesian waters, with the device still working when found. He also added that it is unsure whether it was being used for intelligence or illegal surveying purposes.
Indonesian fishermen had found a separate version of the Sea Wing UUV in March 2019 in the Riau Islands near the South China Sea and another in East Java earlier this year in January.
However, the Chinese central government has not spoke over the matter.
