Myanmar witnesses cabinet reshuffle: 24 ministers and deputies removed

Kathmandu, February 2. After taking control over legislative, executive and judicial powers, Myanmar Defence Services on Monday announced a major cabinet reshuffle. 

According to the statement issued by the Commander-in-Chief, 24 ministers and their deputies were removed from their post and a new union cabinet was appointed for 11 ministries.

However, Union Judges and justice of the Supreme, Regional and State high courts will remain in their post. Chairs and members of the Anti-Corruption Commission and the National Human Rights Commission will also remain in their offices. But, the Chair and members of the Nay Pyi Taw Council and Union Civil Service Board will be removed and replaced with new officials. 

The military on Monday claimed that the national multiparty general elections held on November 8 were against the law. In charge of election fraud, the military top ruling leaders including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and several regional and state ministers. 

The government of the US and Australia has urged Myanmar’s military release the detained and respect the election. The White House has threatened unspecified action if the step were not reversed.

Myanmar had recently gained independence from the military rule in 2011 A.D. But, even after the shift to democracy, the military had retained much of the supreme powers.
