Sunday. February 7. A glacial burst has caused a massive flash flood in the Dhauliganga river near the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India.

According to the district magistrate office, hundreds Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel have rushed to the spot to carry out evacuation operations.

The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Trivendra Singh Rawat has urged people not to pay any attention to any kind of rumours. “The district administration, police and disaster management departments have been instructed to handle the situation,” said CM Rawat.

Media reports suggest that the flood has engulfed many river bankside houses. Local Police have confirmed huge damage to the Rishi Ganga power project due to the breach of a glacier in the Tapovan area.

Due to sudden and heavy rainfall, the possibility of flood in the lower areas of Alaknanda is also heightened. The authorities have alerted people living in coastal areas.

While the impact may not be felt in Rishikesh and Haridwar, the towns have been placed on notice.
