Kathmandu, June 21. The New Zealand Olympic Committee on Monday shortlisted national players for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has become the world’s first transgender athlete to get qualified for the Olympic Games.

43-year old Hubbard will play for New Zealand in the women’s 87-kilogram super heavyweight category. Hubbard said, “I am grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that has been given to me by so many New Zealanders.”

The Committee Chief told Reuters that Hubbard took birth as a male, and she transitioned to female in 2013. Before 2013, Hubbard competed in men’s weightlifting competitions.

Media reports suggest that Hubbard has been eligible to compete in the Olympics since 2015 when the International Olympic Committee brought changes criteria on testosterone levels.

Earlier in 2019, Hubbard bagged the gold medal in Pacific Games, Samoa. She also became commonwealth games champion in 2018.
