Kathmandu, October 16. On Friday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution extending the mission of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) until July 2022.

The 15-member council passed “Resolution 2600,” which urged the Secretary-General to order an assessment of Haiti’s present difficulties, followed by an effort to improve mission effectiveness. A prospective extension of the existing mandate was also proposed in the resolution.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti was terminated in October 2019, and a new special political mission, the Bureau intégré des Nations Unies en Hati (BUNUH), was established. The security council’s new mission was established with the purpose of coordinating with Haitian authorities to ensure political stability and preserve people’s fundamental rights.
