Travel restrictions are “blunt measures” to preventing Omicron variant, says WHO
Kathmandu, December 1. On Tuesday, The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the “blanket” travel restrictions currently imposed by dozens of countries will have no effect on the prevention of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
WHO said in its travel advice statement, “Blanket travel bans will not prevent the international spread, and they place a heavy burden on lives and livelihoods … In addition, they can adversely impact global health efforts during a pandemic by disincentivizing countries to report and share epidemiological and sequencing data.”
While addressing the member states session, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called travel restrictions a “blunt measure”. He urged the countries to take rational risk-reduction measures in keeping with the International Health Regulations.”
Ghebreyesus also thanked Botswana and South Africa for quickly detecting and reporting the new strain. He also said that it was disappointing that “these countries were being penalized by others for doing the right thing.”
