Nepal Government bans import of non-essential goods
The imports have been banned for 10 items, including chips, mobile phones, cars among others
Kathmandu, April 27. Nepal Government has banned the import of luxury or non-essential goods. According to the list released by the Nepal Gazette, ten items have been banned for import.
The ban will last until mid-July 2022, the end of this fiscal year. The items that are banned include chips and snacks(Lays, Kurkure), readymade liquor, readymade tobacco and cigarette. Furthermore, diamond import is also banned, except those used as raw material.
In addition, import of mobile phones that cost above US$ 600, color TV above 32 inches, SUVs, cars and vans (except ambulances and hearse), motorcycles above 250 cc have been banned. Toys and playing cards are also barred to import.
Earlier, the central bank ordered banks to not provide loans for imports of such luxury items. The increased imports have been blamed for the decreasing foreign reserves in the country.
