Kathmandu, June 15. On Tuesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requested financial institutions all around the world to shift their investments away from the fossil fuel industry.

Speaking on a video message screened at the Austrian World Summit in Vienna, Guterres said that renewable energy was the peace plan of the 21st century and that financial institutions should begin investing in renewable energy.

“The window to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis “is closing fast” … I call on all financial actors to abandon … polluting fossil fuels, especially coal, and accelerating the renewables-based energy transition,” Guterres said.

He also warned that almost half of the world’s population is already in danger. “Cheaper, more reliable, and fairer options for energy should have been developed sooner,” he said.
