Record set by organizing golf tournament at world’s highest peak in Lomanthang
Kathmandu, August 27. A record has been set by organising a golf tournament at world’s highest 4,645 meters above sea level at Lobathang of Lomanthang Rural Municipality-5 in Mustang district. Indradhara Bista confirmed that Nepal set a record by successfully concluding the tournament at world’s highest height.
Earlier, the Yak Golf Course in Sikkim, India had registered its name in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s highest golf course. The course stands at the height of 3,970 meters above sea level.
The nine-hole tournament participated by 36 golfers was inaugurated by Dr Rita Thapa, 81. In men’s category, Shyam Tamang won the title with 22 points, and in women’s Sushma Singh with 15 points.
In the current fiscal year, 2022/23, Lomanthang Rural Municipality released Rs 1 million to organise the high-altitude golf tournament which is expected to develop and promote tourism and mountain sports in Mustang district. “A team of technicians last year observed the golf course. The tournament was organised after the team identified and found it suitable,” said the rural municipality chair Tasi Narbu Gurung.
Prem Prasad Tulachan, a member of the House of Representatives, believed that the golf tournament has explored new opportunities in sports and tourism sector of Mustang. Constructed with Rs 1 million under the Constituency Infrastructure Development Programme of the Gandaki provincial government, the golf course spanning around three kilometers in width is 12 kilometers away from Lomangthang.
