Actor Robbie Coltrane, Harry Potter’s Hagrid, dies at 72

Kathmandu, October 15. Actor Robbie Coltrane, famous for playing half-giant Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” movies has died aged 72. His agent Belinda Wright said he died on Friday at a hospital in Scotland.

Wright further said that Coltrane was “forensically intelligent” and “brilliantly witty.”

Actor Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell.

Coltrane’s co-star and Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe said in a statement, “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on that set.” Author JK Rowling and Actor Emma Watson also paid tributes to the actor.

He appeared in all eight Harry Potter movies. His other roles include detective in “Cracker”, Russian crime boss in the James Bond thrillers “GoldenEye” and “The World is Not Enough” among many others.

He was born as Anthony Robert McMillan, but renamed himself in honor of jazz musician John Coltrane.
