Kathmandu, November 28. People in China lost their patience and took to the streets to protest against President Xi Jinping, as severe covid lockdowns had made public lives difficult.

An apartment fire that broke out in Urumqi city was one of the factors that gave rise to the protest. The incident took lives of ten people, who couldn’t escape the high rise building due to strictly enforced lockdowns. Reportedly, the lockdowns have took lives of children, pregnant mothers among others due to lack of healthcare facilities.

The protests erupted on Friday and spread to cities namely Xinjiang, Shanghai and Beijing. The ‘zero covid’ policy has helped curb the disease, but resulted in short supply of food and other supplies for the public.

While protestors chanted slogans against Xi, the protests have spread to at least eight cities.

Some of the restrictions was eased on Monday, in response to the public protest. But, experts have said the Chinese government would not still back out on their covid policies.
