Kathmandu, March 3. A recent study conducted by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research has found that black mothers in the country, regardless of their economic status, struggle to have better birth outcomes.

After examining nearly 2 million childbirths in California over a nine-year time frame, the research team reported that the childbirth outcomes in the wealthiest black families are worse than that of the poorest families.

According to the report, newborn mortality among black children in the highest income bracket is about 23% greater than infant mortality among white children in the lowest income bracket.

The maternal mortality rate for Black mothers at the highest income levels was also discovered to be comparable to that of White mothers at the lowest levels.

The data clearly reveals that pregnant black women, particularly those with significant financial resources, are not getting enough medical care and service.

The authors of the study claim that “policies seeking to achieve racial health equity cannot succeed if they only target economic markers of disadvantage.”
