Kathmandu, March 11. The United Nations has marked the first-ever International Day to Combat Islamophobia, calling for a worldwide conversation that fosters tolerance, peace, and respect for religious diversity as well as human rights.

On Friday, a special gathering took place at which speakers emphasized the importance of implementing specific actions to combat the rising trend of hatred, discrimination, and violence against Muslims.

While addressing the event, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that 2 billion Muslims live all across the globe, and all of them represent humanity in all its glorious diversity. “Yet, they often face bigotry and prejudice simply because of their faith”.

Guterres further said that the growing hatred that Muslims face is not an isolated development. It is an unavoidable component of the rise of ethno-nationalism, neo-Nazi ideologies, and violence against vulnerable groups like Muslims, Jews, some minority Christian communities, and others.

“Discrimination diminishes us all. And it is incumbent on all of us to stand up against it. We must never be bystanders to bigotry,” he said.
