Thamel Takes Steps Toward Enhanced Safety with CCTV Installation

Kathmandu, Dec 7: The installation of CCTV cameras in Thamel, the main tourist hub in Kathmandu, has officially commenced. Every thoroughfare of Thamel will be equipped with CCTV cameras, thanks to the initiative of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, supported by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari.

Council Chairperson Bhabishwor Sharma explained that the installation of CCTV cameras aims to enhance the cleanliness, beauty, safety, and organization of the Thamel area, contributing to the overall peace and security of the region. Currently, 80 CCTV cameras have been installed at key locations, including Lainchour Marg, Chhetrapati Marg, Nursing Chowk Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Satghumti Marg, JP Line Marg, and Paryatan Marg within Thamel.

“We are actively working to install a total of 112 CCTV cameras, including four larger ones. As of now, 80 CCTV cameras have been successfully installed,” stated Sharma. Prior to the installation, a joint study by representatives of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Kathmandu Valley Police Office, and the Thamel Tourism Development Council was conducted to determine the optimal locations for the cameras.

Council Vice-Chair Sahadev Dhamala highlighted the potential of CCTV cameras in controlling criminal activities within Thamel, contributing to the overall safety and security of the area. The Thamel Tourism Development Council, established in 2047 BS, includes over 2,000 landlords and businessmen associated with the development of the Thamel area.
