Kathmandu, Jan 20: Nepal has taken a prominent role as a founding member in the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) held in Kampala, Uganda. The summit, occurring against the backdrop of geopolitical complexities, Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts, the global economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change issues, and challenges faced by underdeveloped nations, assumes heightened significance.

The Non-Aligned Movement has become increasingly vital amidst unfulfilled commitments from Western nations towards the well-being of underdeveloped countries and tackling climate change-related problems. With the world facing a complex and challenging geopolitical situation, the NAM is poised to amplify its initiative and leadership to address global concerns effectively.

As a founding member, Nepal has been actively participating in the NAM since its inception in 1955. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized the importance of making the NAM stronger, highlighting its historical role in countering colonialism, neo-colonialism, and the dominance of powerful nations.

Nepal, home to Gautama Buddha, the messenger of peace, has a special responsibility to initiate and advocate for peace. The collective appeal for peace from NAM member states, including Nepal, can significantly contribute to preventing the threat of war and fostering a global atmosphere in favor of peace.

The 19th NAM Summit, the United Nations General Assembly, COP-29, and the World Food Organization conference witnessed Nepal’s impactful appeals and commitments, garnering global attention. Nepal’s proactive participation and contributions in these international forums have enhanced its recognition and resonance on the global stage.
