Kathmandu, May 20: According to Iran’s constitution, if the president dies or leaves office, the vice president assumes the presidency until an election is held. This is outlined in Article 131 of the Constitution of Iran.

Following the death of President Ibrahim Raisi, Vice President Mohammad Mokhbar is set to become the acting president. However, Mokhbar can only serve as the acting president for a maximum of 50 days.

The constitution mandates that a new president must be elected within this 50-day period, although this process requires the approval of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

Given the recent tragic accident leading to Raisi’s death, it remains uncertain whether an election will take place within the stipulated timeframe. The last election saw minimal competition, with only 30 percent of voters participating, as most Iranians boycotted the election.
