Ilam, Oct 8: The Mechi Highway, which was blocked for five days due to landslides, has been reopened for traffic. The road section near Maikhola in Ilam Municipality-9 was cleared and made operational from 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

District Police Chief SP Prabhuprasad Dhakal stated that small four-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles are now allowed to operate, while larger vehicles and cargo trucks will be permitted only after assessing the road conditions on Wednesday afternoon.

The Road Division Office in Ilam cleared the highway by constructing a gabion wall and removing debris from the landslide. The highway had been blocked since 4 p.m. last Friday, halting hundreds of vehicles traveling between Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, and hilly districts like Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung. With the road now cleared, traffic has resumed, allowing travelers to reach their destinations.
