Kathmandu, Jan 5: A freelance journalist for the Russian state-run newspaper Izvestia has been killed in a Ukrainian drone strike near Donetsk, a city under Russian control in eastern Ukraine.

Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately targeting Aleksandr Martemanov. Ukraine has not yet issued a statement on the incident.

Izvestia reported that Martemanov was in a civilian car that came under attack on a highway within Russian-controlled territory. Five other journalists were injured in the strike.

The publication stated on its official Telegram channel, “Ukrainian forces have attacked a civilian car carrying Izvestia freelance correspondent Aleksandr Martemanov,” adding that the vehicle was far from the frontline.

Russia’s state news agency RIA noted that the car was returning from reporting on shelling in Gorlovka, a Russian-held town, when the attack occurred. Two RIA journalists were among those injured.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, labeling it a “premeditated murder.”
