Kathmandu, March 26: US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% additional tax on countries purchasing oil and gas from Venezuela, effective April 2. He stated that the move is intended to punish Venezuela for allegedly sending criminals and violent gang members, including members of the Tren de Aragua gang, to the United States.

The decision could impact India’s energy strategy, as Indian refineries had recently halted oil imports from Venezuela. In 2024, India imported 22 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, accounting for only 1.5% of its total imports. However, in July 2024, the US had granted Reliance permission to import Venezuelan oil, which may now be affected by the new tax policy.
