Kathmandu, Aug 12. Lawmakers in Poland have passed a bill that will prevent Holocaust survivors to claim any property that has been confiscated after World War II.

The bill stops Jews to re-claim property that were seized by Poland’s communist era authorities, as it states that administrative decisions can no longer be challenged in court after the expiration of a 30-year period.

The legislation is already passed Poland’s lower house of parliament. However, it still needs to be signed by President Andrzej Duda, before it can come into force.

Israel and US against the bill

While Israel has urged to repeal the law, US has also raised voice against the bill.

Israeli foreign minister has said that the bill damages the rights of the Holocaust victims and that they should repeal the law.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted, “We are troubled by legislation passed in Poland severely restricting restitution for Holocaust survivors and owners of property confiscated during the Communist era, and draft legislation that would gravely weaken media freedom. Our shared values are our mutual security.”
