Kathmandu, October 12. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to conduct an independent inquiry into the Rupandehi event and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Four demonstrators died and 60 others sustained injuries during Sunday’s clash between the public and police at Motipur of Rupandehi district. The violence was triggered when the police attempted to shoo families away from the encroached land of Motipur Industrial Zone.

Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, NHRC Spokesperson said, “An impartial investigation should be conducted into the incident which has claimed the life of the people and culprits should be brought to book. The families of those who died in the incident should be provided with compensation.”

“Arrangements should be made for providing free treatment to the people injured in the incident and for settling the genuinely homeless and landless people in the proper place,” Pokharel added.
