Tribhuvan Airport becomes central hub for “gold smugglers”

Kathmandu, December 12. Officials have confirmed that illegal gold imports from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) continue indefinitely and that people are detained at the airport almost every week for carrying gold illegally.

Satyan Hussein Seju Abu Bakar, an Indian national, was recently arrested on charges of smuggling gold while arriving from the UAE. According to the police headquarters, 31-year-old Bakar was apprehended with 905 grams of semi-solid gold.

35-year-old Kadar Ibrahim from India is also in custody and is being interrogated by a team of Nepal Police. According to our sources, Ibrahim had hidden gold in a plastic-wrapped bag inside his intestinal rectum. The Police caught him after noticing suspicious behaviour in the parking lot.

50-year-old Shiraz Madapat Baputte was also recently arrested with 349 grams of gold. He was caught minutes after arriving from Dubai.
