Government announces public holiday tomorrow: Sonam Lhosar

Kathmandu, February 1. The meeting of the Council of Ministers on Monday, decided to declare a public holiday on the day of Sonam Lhosar.

Sonam Lhosar is a new year festival of the Tamang and Hyolmo people of Nepal. It falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice which is usually the Magh Shukla Pratipada based on the eastern lunar calendar. Sonam in Tamang language means agriculture. Historically, the festival is celebrated after harvesting the crops. 

This year’s Sonam Lhosar falls on February 2, Wednesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed all government offices and public organizations to close their services on Wednesday.
