Kathmandu, April 5. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has inaugurated the dry port at Chobar, Kirtipur on Tuesday, despite protests from locals.

Security was tightened during the event. Additionally, locals were barred from participating in the event.

The area now occupied by the port was previously occupied by the closed Himal Cement Factory. The cement factory was closed down by Deuba in 2002, followed by protests from locals that the factory harmed the environment.

Furthermore, the locals and experts have revolted against the inauguration. They said that the area is not suitable for a dry port and it will harm the environment.

Panchalal Maharjan, Co-ordinator of Chobhar Conservation Committee revealed that the government has hurt the local’s sentiments and caused harm to the area’s cultural significance. He added that the government has taken a short sighted decision ignoring the concerns raised by the locals and experts.
