Kathmandu, April 24. A major fire broke out today in a residential settlement at Bipatpur village, Kailari Rural Municipality-7, Kailali district.

Chief District Officer Kiran Thapa confirmed that 60 houses in the village burned down into ashes. The majority of the victims were mukta kamaiya (or freed bonded labourers) who had houses made up of local vernacular materials. The roofs are constructed of dried wild grass, which catches fire easily.

The fire was put down by joint efforts of local villagers and national security forces. “Rescue and relief operations for the fire survivors are underway,” Thapa added.
