SpiceJet Boeing 737 caught in severe turbulence; 15 passengers sustain injuries
Kathmandu, May 2. A major mid-air turbulence struck a SpiceJet flight in India late on Sunday, injuring at least 15 passengers and three crew members.
Local Media reports suggest that the Boeing 737 passenger jet was on its 3-hour flight from Mumbai to West Bengal’s easternmost city of Durgapur. Onboard were 188 passengers and crew members.
As the pilots started descending to the Durgapur airport, the airplane was struck by heavy winds causing severe turbulence. The hand-carry luggages kept in roof shelves fell over the passengers. 14 passengers and 3 crew members sustained injuries.
According to media sources, two of the passengers are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
A day after the incident, Chief of India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation Arun Kumar ordered a probe into the turbulence incident. “The damage caused to the passengers is unfortunate … more details about the incident’s causes will be released once the investigation is completed,” Kumar said.
