Kathmandu, May 12.  Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday. She was covering military raid in the occupied West Bank when the incident occurred.

A transparent investigation has been promised by Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz. He further added that he was in touch with US and Palestinian officials.

Abu Akleh was 51 and was widely known for her coverage on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Additionally, she was widely known in the West Bank. An outpour of grief has come from West Bank and Arab governments have condemned the killing.

Further, she was a Palestinian-American and had been reporting the conflict for two decades. Her coffin was brought at Palestinian Authority’s headquarters in Ramallah on Thursday.

Moreover, the Palestinian president said the case will be handed over to the International Criminal Court(ICC).

UN chief shocked by killing of Abu Akleh

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday said he is shocked by killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman said, “The secretary-general is appalled by the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American reporter for Al-Jazeera TV, who was shot dead earlier today while covering an operation by Israeli security forces in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.”

Guterres sent condolences of Abu Akleh’s family and wished a recovery to another journalist Ali Samoudi. Ali was injured in the same incident.

The UN chief added that journalists must be allowed to work freely without being targeted.
