New COVID-19 Sub-Variant JN.1 Detected in Nepal: Ministry of Health and Population

Kathmandu. Jan 8: The Ministry of Health and Population in Nepal has confirmed the presence of a new sub-variant, JN.1, of the COVID-19 infection in the country. In an official statement released on Monday, Ministry spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki informed that gene sequencing conducted by the National Public Health Laboratory revealed the presence of the new sub-variant JN.1 in samples collected from individuals of various age groups across different regions of Nepal. The sub-variant was identified in samples from seven individuals.

In response to the discovery, the Ministry has directed all health desks and health offices at entry points to maintain necessary screening and surveillance measures. Additionally, the ministry has emphasized the importance of adhering to public health standards, including avoiding crowded places, maintaining physical distance, using masks, and practicing regular handwashing with soap, to prevent the spread of the infection.
