Kathmandu, Sept 12: Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a military coup.
The ruling came hours after a five-judge panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court found him guilty of orchestrating an attempt to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 election to leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Four of the five judges voted to convict Bolsonaro, while one dissented.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers called the punishment “excessive” and confirmed they would appeal the verdict.
