2020 US Presidential Elections: As Biden gains ground, Trump’s values lead almost half the nation
The 2016 elections ended up creating deep divisions within the personal lives of the American citizens.
Kathmandu. Democratic candidate Joe Biden has been cutting into President Donald Trump’s lead in key battleground states, Georgia (that has 16 electoral votes) and Pennsylvania (20). But experts have cautioned that a win for Biden will not be the ultimate win for the Democratic Party, as the candidate has an uphill battle to fight. The 2020 US Presidential Election is much too close for the Party’s liking, as it looks like Trumpism will be a looming presence in the future.
The Democratic nominee has already won Wisconsin (10), Michigan (16), Minnesota (10), New Hampshire (4), and has a considerable lead in Nevada (6) and Arizona (11). Trump, on the other hand, has secured Ohio (18), Texas (38), Iowa (6),and Florida (29), with a lead in North Carolina (15).
Donald Trump has been articulating his belief about the ballots being compromised for quite some time, and it has left an impression on a lot of his supporters that the elections might not be fair. A contested outcome would only serve to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, and sow the seeds of prolonged conflict in the nation. Trump protestors have already surrounded vote-counting centers, including Arizona that is projected to be crucial in the Presidential race. Similar incidents have been recorded throughout the states.
Instead of a simple political disagreement on the willingness or unwillingness to support Trump, the issue has become a matter of morality for many American families. An NDTV news report has noted that the 2016 elections ended up creating deep divisions within the personal lives of the American citizens, as families were broken and friendships became strained.
Jaime Saal, a psychotherapist at the Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine in Rochester Hills, has commented that would take efforts from both sides to resolve this current disconnect. “Unfortunately, I don’t think national healing is as easy as changing the president,” she added.
The International Crisis Group had claimed while the President’s “toxic rhetoric and willingness to court conflict to advance his personal interests have no precedent in modern U.S. history,” the divisions that were exposed during his Presidency was already present. Trumpism may be a facet of American politics and social affairs for a long while, as Trump has left a legacy that will be difficult to overcome for any President in the future.
Biden’s campaigns throughout the race has been that he was a more experienced candidate, and that he was not Donald Trump, as mentioned by a Jacobin Report. His seldom bragging of defeating the much admired Bernie Sanders and other democratic nominees, as well as his reluctance to adopt a “broader vision,” may lay the groundwork for another candidacy like Trump’s to easily evolve, according to Barry Eidlin, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at McGill University.
Additionally, an Al Jazeera report has put forth that as Trump continues to file lawsuits in various states, and undermines the democratic process of the elections “the blue wave that Democrats hoped for did not come to fruition.” Trump is still immensely popular and his promotion of conservative values, that showed in his push to nominate Amy Coney Barrett to the US Supreme Court, mere weeks before the Elections may have solidified his base within a significant number of Americans who still adhere to those values.
Donald Trump will remain as one of the most divisive figures in US Presidential history, and his mark will not fade in the upcoming years, if ever. Biden, if he secures a win, will lead a nation where many people will still look to his predecessor as their guiding point.
Trumpism is here to stay, and it is unlikely that a Biden Presidency will solve that, unless Biden goes beyond trying to re-establish the pre-Trump status-quo. The Democrats cannot just keep on emphasizing that they are better, they have to do better in the likely event that they win.
