Kathmandu. The nomination of Amy Coney Barrett by the President of the United States of America was met with mixed reactions by both the Senate and the American public. While the Democratic Party pushed for weeks to halt the process, the Republicans, who occupy the Senate majority had in turn pressed on the speedy confirmation process. Regardless of the struggle between the two parties, Amy Coney Barrett has become an Associate Justice in the highest court in the nation, filling out the position left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and strengthening the conservative hold in the judicial body.

The Supreme Court of the United States, is chaired by nine justices, and with Barrett’s confirmation, 6 of those seats will be filled by the conservatives. While swearing her in a Rose Garden ceremony, Trump thanked the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Lindsey Graham, and claimed that this was a “momentous day,” for the nation. “It is highly fitting that Justice Barrett fills the seat of a true pioneer for women, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” he further commented.

While speaking at the White House, Barrett stated, ” The oath that I have solemnly taken tonight means, at its core, that I will do my job without any fear or favor, and that I will do so independently of both the political branches and of my own preferences.” The oath was administered by Justice Clarence Thomas at the White House during the celebration. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer a separate judicial oath at the Supreme Court on Tuesday, after which she will be able to serve on the Court.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat, claimed that this was “the last gasp of a desperate party”, and that the vote itself was “illegitimate”. Senator Lindsey Graham who is a Republican, on the other hand praised Barrett for her poise as well as her devotion to her faith and noted that while she may be “unabashedly pro-life, but she’s not going to apply ‘the law of Amy’ to all of us.”

It will be a matter of speculation of whether Barrett will be leaning towards a particular political view while serving on the court. She is expected to participate during a case on November 10 that will address Obamacare.

Democrats have been openly showcasing their displeasure throughout the process and some have argued for increasing the number of justices in the Supreme Court, through a process known as court-packing. Democratic nominee Joe Biden had previously claimed that while he is not a fan of “packing” the court, he might have to consider appointing a bipartisan committee to evaluate this subject.
