Husband throws acid at wife in Janakpur, here is how the acid laws work

Kathmandu. A young woman has been attacked with acid by her husband in Janakpur. Aarti Sah, 26, Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-7 was attacked with acid by her husband Sanjiv Sah.

The Police have arrested Sanjeev Sah, 27, of Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-20 on charge of the attack. Aarti married Sanjeev three years ago. As her relationship with her husband soured, she shifted to live with her parents and ran a vegetable business in the Pethia Bazaar of Janakpur.

Aarti is currently undergoing treatment at Janaki Healthcare in Janakpur. Her face and chest are burnt by the acid attack. According to locals, Aarti was attacked with acid on Saturday morning. The government has introduced new legal provisions against acid attackers, while victims are openly demanding a law that would severely punish those who sell and distribute acid. According to the legal provision: if a person is mutilated by throwing, spraying, pouring or consuming acid, causing damage on various body parts, the perpetrator will be imprisoned for 20 years and fined up to NRs. 1 million.

Depending on the nature of the offense, imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years and a fine of NRs. 100,000 to 500,000 shall be charged. A person who attempts for an attack but failed also will be imprisoned for 10 years and fined up to NRs. 500,000.

It is important to consider the physical and mental pain of the victim and the severity of the mutilation while determining the punishment, as per the law.
